The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, or BLS, classifies bread delivery route salesmen under “Driver/Sales Workers.” The BLS reports that jobs for these professionals are expected to increase 10 percent between 2010 and 2020, which is about average compared to the 14 percent growth rate for all jobs. Job opportunities are directly tied to the health of the economy and population increases, as more reps are needed when demand for grocery stores increase.

As a general rule, if a vehicle weighs in excess of 18,000 lbs. a CDL license is needed. In order to secure such a license, a written test followed by a road test is necessary. If you are looking at Fed Ex Ground, you do need a non-CDL Class “C” License. For high volume routes, beverage routes or routes that require refrigeration, you usually need a CDL Class “B” License. Neither license is that difficult to obtain but can cost as much as $800 and up if you choose to go through a driving school.

A new or existing bread truck route can be a very profitable investment. In addition to earning a nice living, there are many other advantages:

1.) You are your own boss and this is your business. You are usually responsible only to yourself. With a few exceptions, you can generally set up your own route delivery schedule for the delivery of the product and the ongoing servicing of your customers.

2.) Many of your bread truck route expenses may be written off over the course of the year including bread truck vehicle expenses, depreciation of vehicle and, in some cases, a portion of your home office, if you use that as a base of operation. Also, if you are paying off loans to the seller of a route, the interest you’re paying should be eligible be written off as a business expense. In most cases, your taxes will be reduced significantly from what they would be if you were working as a (W2) employee for someone.

3.) As your bread truck route is built up and customers and sales increase, so also does the value of your route. If you are aggressive, there is almost always additional business and customers to be added to your expanding route and we will be here when you grow while being properly insured.

We work hard for all of our bread truck owner operators and take pride in finding the best coverage to protect you and your business assets with quality commercial auto insurance and general liability, excess liability and commercial property insurance.
